In 2013 Lindemann Performance Products have started a project together with Danish Technological Institute as part of The Danish Innovation Voucher Scheme (in Denmark called Knowledge Vouchers). The Knowledge Voucher project is a part of the grant program sponsored by the Danish Ministry of Higher Education and Science.
The project between Lindemann Performance Products and Technological Institute will run till the end of 2014. The purpose of the project is to determine the effect of PTFE additives on the worn out sub-sea systems. Lindemann Performance Products have developed a range of Stop Leak additives with PTFE (formerly known under ABCON brand), which have been used with great success in the marine industry.
With the help of the institute’s Nano- and Microtechnological Department a laboratory set-up will document the sealing and wear protection effect on the stern tube systems.
Another goal of the project is to define if PTFE additives can improve lubricating qualities of biodegradable oils when used in sub-sea systems, which often operate in rough environment and have an increased risk of deterioration when mixed with sea water.
The obligatory conversion to EALs is at very hot subject with all equipment manufacturers at the moment, since the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued final Vessel General Permit (VGP) regulating discharges from commercial vessels in order to protect the nation’s water from ship-borne pollutants and reduce invasive species in US waters.
The results of the project will be available on request in the beginning of 2015.
